Pair of podiums for Penrite Holden in Darwin.

Holden driver David Reynolds has put his Penrite Racing Commodore onto the podium after both races at this weekend’s Darwin Triple Crown, Round 7 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

His third on Saturday and second in today’s 72-lap feature race also saw Reynolds move back to third overall in the Supercars drivers’ standings.

“We still need a lot to catch these cars around me, otherwise a really good job from the team,” Reynolds said. “We did everything we could but didn’t get there but overall we’ve had a good weekend.”

The next best placed Holden was the factory #88 Red Bull Holden of Jamie Whincup in fifth. Whincup fought back from second-last on the opening lap today after twice copping bumps which put the car off the road.

After a strong strategic play by the Red Bull Holden Racing Team, running a late pit stop strategy, Whincup was able to pick-up some places during the back end of the race to secure fifth place on Saturday’s race also.

“We had it against us all weekend with the cracked chassis yesterday, which we fixed overnight,” said Whincup.

“That was throwing all sorts of things out for us, then we couldn’t really get a balance. Like the last two rounds, DC (David Cauchi, Race Engineer) did a great job to keep making the car competitive in the race.

“I’m certainly happy and proud of the performance of everyone in the team this weekend with what we’ve got. The real battle is done at the workshop. We need to bring a faster car to the track. That’s motorsport, it’s been the same since it started, so we just need to make the cars faster, which we’ll continue to try to do.” Whincup added.

Behind that pack on Sunday, Anton De Pasquale took eighth in the second Erebus-run Holden, while Shane van Gisbergen took out tenth place for the race.

On Saturday, van Gisberegn finished eighth with the Mobil 1 Mega Fuels Holden of James Courtney finishing ninth with a solid drive and teammate Scott Pye rounding out the Top-10.

The Championship now shifts to the Watpac Townsville 400 from 5-7 July.
