Holden wins Sandown 500 and Pirtek Enduro Cup

The Red Bull Holden Racing Team have won the Sandown 500 with Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes taking the #888 Commodore to victory today in the penultimate round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

The win also saw the two best drivers in the history of Supercars claim the coveted Pirtek Enduro Cup, the fifth time the Triple Eight team have won the top enduro prize and the sixth time of the seven Enduro cups a Holden team has won.

The race win today is the fifth straight win for the Red Bull Holden Racing team who also equal the Holden Dealer Team’s all-time Sandown enduro record.

“Big thanks to CL [Craig Lowndes] he’s done an amazing job all season of endurance and it’s great to be here in victory lane,” said Whincup.

“Commiserations to #97 they did a fantastic job today and deserved to be up here too.”

Lowndes Enduro Cup win saw him become the first driver to ever win the trophy in back-to-back years after securing it with Steve Richards in 2018.

It was a bittersweet win for the team today with the second Red Bull Holden Racing Team car of Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander looking in contention to win the Sandown 500 before a shock absorber issue on lap 150 of 161 sent the #97 into the pits and out of contention to win the race.

Scott Pye and Warren Luff in the #2 Walkinshaw Andretti United Commodore continued their fine partnership together to finish an amazing fifth place after starting 22nd on the grid today.

His teammates James Courtney and Jack Perkins also put in a strong performance, sliding home in seventh after 500km of racing action.

Penrite Racing’s Anton De Pasquale and Will Brown also had a strong day behind the wheel of their Holden Commodore with a top-10 result for the two youngsters.

The #888 Commodore claimed Armor All pole position for on Saturday after dominating in wet conditions.
Lowndes won the opening sprint race of the day between PIRTEK Enduro Cup co-drivers in tough conditions before Whincup claimed his fourth Sandown pole position late in the day with a win in the main drivers’ race for Pole.

The #9 Penrite Commodore of David Reynolds and Luke Youlden had a solid day in the wet with Reynolds finishing 3rd in Race 29 to ensure the pair would start from the second row on the grid for tomorrow’s race.

The next best placed Holden was that of Jake and Brodie Kosteck behind the wheel of thier Boost Mobile Kostecki Brothers Holden. A phenomenal effort from Brodie who started the main drivers race from 22nd on the grid and gained 14 places to ensure he and cousin Jake started from the fourth row of the grid.

With the Supercars teams’ championship still up for the taking the Red Bull Holden Racing Team will be looking to finish the season in winning ways at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 – Nov 22-24.
