Shane van Gisbergen’s Holden wins in Newcastle

Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver Shane van Gisbergen has cleaned up on Saturday in Newcastle with a win in the penultimate race of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

Van Gisbergen was solid throughout the race with a clinical performance to win in Newcastle which is the sixth-straight race win for the Commodore in the back end of the 2019 season.

“Yeah it was an awesome day for us, thanks heaps to the team, we had an awesome car and a cool start, a good battle and then forced our way through,” said van Gisbergen.

“Yeah thanks heaps to Shippy [Engineer] for tuning up the car and to the entire team, it was a great effort and a great strategy to get us the win.”

Earlier in the day van Gisbergen also picked up the ARMOR ALL Pole Position with a sensational lap in the Top-10 Shootout.

Despite starting as the first car out, after only just scraping into the shootout in 10th earlier in the day, van Gisbergen blasted his Holden around the streets of Newcastle to be the first driver since Garth Tander in 2009 to claim pole from 10th in the shootout order.

The Top-10 was filled with Commodores on Saturday in Newcastle with Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds putting in a solid performance with a fourth place result.

Walkinshaw Andretti United enjoyed a strong day in the office with Scott Pye bringing his chariot home in seventh – an astronomical effort after the #2 driver was hospitalised on Friday with a bug and also started the race from the back of the grid, making up 18 spots to his finishing result.

“Yeah I needed to right that wrong [crash] from qualifying and I needed to capitalise on the fast car we have this weekend and yeah it was a lot of fun, especially after the last couple of days [with illness],” said Pye.

“I couldn’t believe it, I thought maybe the team hadn’t pitted me and when Starry [Engineer] said I’m racing for position I knew I was going better than I thought I was, and our pace was really good at the end, so I just kept pushing, and pushing, right to the flag and I gave it everything.”

His teammate James Courtney secured seventh after a strong performance on the streets of Newcastle for the Holden squad.

The second Red Bull Holden of Jamie Whincup came home in eighth. Unfortunately for the 7-time champ an error in the closing half of the race saw him spear down the escape road at Turn 1 after running in second at the time.

In ninth was Freightliner Racing’s Tim Slade who is looking to finish his 2019 season on a high, while the IRWIN Racing Commodore of Mark Winterbottom rounded out the Top-10 in 10th.

Tomorrow will see one final 250km race left for the 2019 season and with rain predicted, is expected to showcase plenty of action as we close out the year of Supercars racing.
